9. Peace of Mind Trust - 21 May 2021 - USD $516 Million

The five Pennsylvanian winners of the 21 May 2021 USD $516 million jackpot remain unknown as they chose to stay anonymous by forming a trust and having their lawyers accept the prize money on their behalf.

That doesn't mean we don't have any details on the win, however. As covered in 6ABC, the winners picked the name Peace of Mind Trust and chose to receive the winnings as a lump sum payment of USD $348.6 million. After taxes, the prize was worth USD $254,233,980.

8. Laarni Bibal - 7 June 2019 - USD $522 Million

Although Laarni Bibal did accept her big jackpot win under her own name, not much else is known about the otherwise secretive woman who chose not to revail details such as her age and location.

Laarni won USD $522 million with random quick pick numbers on a ticket she purchased in a local store in San Diego, California. Laarni's big win was also big news for the store, which received a USD $1 million payout.

California Lottery officials told The San Diego Union-Tribune that after finding out about her 7 June win, Laarni hid the ticket for several weeks while planning how to handle the win before finally coming forward to accept the USD $340 million lump sum payment (before federal taxes).

When asked where she hid the ticket, Laarni said, "I can't tell you. The secret hiding place is still a secret!"

It was just another normal day for one Indiana family that bought a few Mega Millions tickets on a whim while stopping for gas.

Little did they know one of those tickets would change their lives forever when their second row matched all of the winning numbers for the 8 July 2016 draw for a USD $536 million jackpot.

The family's final payout was a USD $271 lump sum, after taxes. According to the Courier Journal, the family has chosen to remain private in order "to protect the safety and well-being of their children." The family decided to remain in Indiana, as they couldn't imagine living anywhere else.

4. Ira Curry and Steve Tran - 17 December 2013 - USD $648 Million

In October 2013, Mega Millions reached a new turning point in its history when the lottery implemented new rules designed to increase the size of its jackpots.

The rule changes worked so well that the lottery barely had to wait before getting a massive USD $648 million - almost a billion AUD!

It took twenty-one rollovers until the Mega Millions jackpot was finally won on 17 December 2013. Surprisingly enough, even with astronomically low winning odds, the jackpot was split between two winners.

The first to come forward with a winning ticket was 56-year-old Ira Curry from Stone Mountain, Georgia. Ira had used family birthdays and his lucky number to pick his numbers.

The second winner was Steve Tran from San Jose, California. Tran almost ended up missing out on the momentous win, as his winning ticket had been sitting for a while in a pile of old tickets he'd forgotten to check.

After splitting the lump sum amount, each winner received a prize worth USD $173,819,742 before taxes.

3. Merle and Patricia Butler, The Three Amigos, and Anonymous - 30 March 2012 - USD $656 Million

One of the three won in Kansas and made use of the state's laws to remain anonymous when accepting their USD $218.6 piece of the prize money.

The second ticket belonged to a group of Maryland public school employees going by the name "The Three Amigos." Each of the three put in USD $20 in order to collectively buy sixty tickets. In return for that USD $20, they ended up splitting USD $218.6 million!

The last ticket belonged to a married couple - Merle and Patricia Butler from Red Bud, Illinois. Their lump sum payout ended up being worth USD $111 million after taxes.

According to CNN, the ticket had been purchased by a lottery club called The Wolverine FFL Club, from Oakland County, Michigan.

The group decided to take the winnings in a lump sum of USD $776 million which was worth USD $557 million after taxes - netting just under USD $140 million for each participant.

A lawyer accepted the jackpot check and read out a statement on the group's behalf, saying, "This kind of money will impact the families of our club members for generations to come. We plan to stay humble and pay it forward through charitable giving in southeast Michigan."

What was the largest Mega Millions jackpot in history?

1. Anonymous - 23 October 2018 - USD $1.537 Billion

So what was the largest Mega Millions jackpot in history?

Unfortunately, but understandably, the winner of the largest Mega Millions jackpot chose to remain anonymous so we don't much about them other than that the ticket was sold in South Carolina with the winning numbers 5, 28, 62, 65, and 50, plus the Mega Ball 5.

The historic draw took place on 23 October 2018. Before the draw, lottery officials actually expected the jackpot to be the biggest of any lottery ever, but slightly lower ticket sales than estimated meant it didn't quite beat US Powerball's USD $1.58 billion record. Still, USD $1.537 billion (AUD $2.179 billion) is no mean feat!

We may never know who exactly won the money, but CBS News estimated that the cash value was USD $913 million.

When will the next Mega Millions record jackpot be?
